Chip was abandoned by his pack when he was 7 months old. He was considered useless for being weak and having few abilities to favor his pack. He was found by Gaudner, a wolf-dog, who did his best to teach him how to hunt, swim and fight. Chip didn't learn much, since he didn't spend much time with Gaudner, who died trampled on one of the hunts.
